Why BLS Matters: The Science of Survival

Cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death, but immediate intervention can double or triple a victim’s chance of survival.

The Mechanics of CPR

During cardiac arrest, the heart stops pumping blood to the brain and other vital organs. By performing high-quality chest compressions, you act as the victim’s heart, manually circulating oxygenated blood.

  • The Power of Rescue Breaths: While the air we inhale is 21% oxygen, we only utilize about 5%. The air you exhale still contains approximately 16% oxygen, which is more than sufficient to sustain a victim’s vital organs during resuscitation.
  • The Critical Window: Brain tissue is susceptible to oxygen deprivation. For every minute that passes without CPR and defibrillation, the chance of survival decreases by 7–10%.

The Role of the AED

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is the only way to “restart” or reset a heart in a lethal rhythm (such as Ventricular Fibrillation). Modern BLS protocols emphasize integrating an AED as quickly as it becomes available to maximize the “Chain of Survival.”

Our Commitment: Our certification cards are nationally recognized and accepted by government agencies, hospitals, school districts, and private healthcare organizations.
